Manual Glass Viscometers

Use of high quality instruments ensures test reliability and accuracy, and all CANNON glass capillary viscometers are traceable to a NIST calibration and manufactured in our ISO 9001-registered, A2LA-accredited laboratory. CANNON Instrument Company has been making glass capillary viscometers since 1938 and because no single viscometer is ideally suited to every application, we offer a wide variety of glass capillary viscometers. Our experienced staff is happy to assist you with viscometer selection. Viscometer options include:

Transparent
For transparent/translucent liquids
Suspended Level
For transparent/translucent liquids. Ideal for testing at multiple temperatures because they have the same viscometer constant at all temperatures.
Dilution
For dilution of polymer solutions to provide an estimate of the molecular size and shape.
Reverse Flow
For transparent and opaque liquids. Must be cleaned, dried and refilled between repeat determinations.
Vacuum
A special type of reverse-flow viscometer for highly viscous samples (transparent or opaque). Accurately controlled vacuum is required to pull the liquid through the viscometer.

    ASTM D2171

    The Asphalt Institute Vacuum Viscometer measures the viscosity of highly viscous materials according to ASTM D2171. Minimum sample volume is 3 mL. Minimum bath depth is 180 mm (7.1 in). Viscometers are provided with a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet. Permanently attached round metal holders are included or may be ordered separately.

    The BS/IP/MSL Miniature Suspended Level Viscometer measures kinematic viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. Minimum sample volume is 4 mL.   • BS/IP/RF U-Tube Reversed Flow Viscometer

    ASTM D445, ISO 3104

    The BS/IP/RF U-Tube Reverse Flow Viscometer measures kinematic viscosity of opaque Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. Minimum sample volume is 7 mL. Minimum bath depth is 280 mm (11 in). Viscometers are calibrated at 40°C (the viscometer constant is the same at all temperatures) and are provided with a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet. Holders are sold separately.     ASTM D445, ISO 3104

    The BS/U-Tube Viscometer measures kinematic viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. Minimum sample volume is 7 mL (sizes A-C), 12 mL (sizes D-F), and 23 mL (sizes G-H). Minimum bath depth is 280 mm (11 in).   • CANNON-Fenske Opaque Viscometer (Reversed Flow)

    ASTM D445, ASTM D2170, ISO 3104

    The Cannon-Fenske Opaque Viscometer is a reverse-flow type, for measurement of kinematic viscosity of dark Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. It permits measurement of liquids whose meniscus cannot be seen at the timing marks when using a Cannon-Fenske Routine-type viscometer. Used to measure kinematic viscosity of liquid (cutback) asphalts and road oils at 60°C (140°F) in range of 30 to 6000 centistokes according to ASTM D2170. Also used to study lubricating oils at low temperatures when investigating the effect of various additives on lubricating and hydraulic oils. External pressure can be applied to vary shear stress and shear rate. Specifications conform to ASTM D446 and ISO 3105. Minimum sample volume is 12 mL. Minimum bath depth is 229 mm (9 in). Special constant viscometers are available at additional cost. Both calibrated and uncalibrated viscometers are available. Calibrated viscometers include a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet. Holders are sold separately.

    The Cannon-Fenske Routine Viscometer measures kinematic viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids, particularly petroleum products or lubricants, according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. Specifications conform to ASTM D446 and ISO 3105. Minimum sample volume is 7 mL. Minimum bath depth is 230 mm (8 in). Special constant viscometers are available at additional cost. Available as a calibrated viscometer (which includes a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet) or an uncalibrated viscometer. Holders are sold separately.

  • CANNON-Ubbelohde Dilution Viscometer

    ASTM D445, ISO 3104

    The Cannon-Ubbelohde Dilution Viscometer measures intrinsic viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. Minimum sample volume is 8 mL (can be diluted to 40 mL). Minimum bath depth is 305 mm (12 in). The CANNON CT-518 bath is recommended. (CT-500 and CT-600 baths are not deep enough.) Viscometer constant is the same at all temperatures. Both calibrated and uncalibrated viscometers are available. Calibrated viscometers include a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet.     The Cannon Four-Bulb Shear Dilution Viscometer measures intrinsic viscosities extrapolated to zero shear rate with negligible kinetic energy correction. Minimum sample volume is 20 mL. Minimum bath depth is 280 mm (11 in) for 5-fold dilution viscometers and 430 mm (17 in) for 10-fold dilution type. Both calibrated and uncalibrated viscometers are available.   • CANNON-Ubbelohde Viscometer

    ASTM D445, ISO 3104

    The Cannon-Ubbelohde Viscometer, with a more rugged design than standard Ubbelohde viscometers, is a suspended level viscometer for measurement of kinematic viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D 445 and ISO 3104. Also used for evaluating jet and hydraulic lubricants. Especially suited for use at temperatures above 93 °C (200 °F) or below –18 °C (0 °F). Require no kinetic energy corrections over 0.5 to 100 000 centistokes range.. Minimum sample volume is 11 mL. Minimum bath depth is 254 mm (10 in) but it must be submerged to 220 mm (8.5 in). Both calibrated and uncalibrated viscometers are available. Calibrated viscometers include a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet. Holders are sold separately.

    The Zeitfuchs® Cross-Arm Viscometer measures kinematic viscosity of transparent and opaque Newtonian liquids according to ASTM D445 and ISO 3104. Filling and cleaning does not require removal from the constant temperature bath. Minimum sample volume is 1 mL to 3 mL. Minimum bath depth is 230 mm (9 in). Unity factor series has a constant within ± 0.2% of the values listed. Viscometers are provided with a certificate of calibration and instruction sheet. Permanently attached round or rectangular metal holders are included or may be ordered separately. 

    Also used to measure kinematic viscosity of kiquid (cutback) asphalts and road oils according to ASTM D2170.
