Choosing Atlantic-style Versus Ubbelohde-style Tubes
Both the Atlantic-style and Ubbelohde-style tubes perform well in Cannon’s automated viscometers. However, each style brings its own advantages to consider when selecting the best tube for your application.

Atlantic-style Tubes
The Atlantic-style tube has been successfully used in Cannon Automated Viscometers since the 1970s.
Suitable for most applications, the Atlantic-style tube used in Cannon’s next generation models
(e.g. CAV 4.1 and CAV 4.2) is half the size of its predecessor. It provides the same reliability and precession
you have come to expect from CANNON while reducing solvent usage and disposal costs by 50%.
Advantages
-
- Higher throughput for high viscosity samples
- Less solvent usage for cleaning high viscosity samples
Recommended Use
-
- All high viscosity samples >100 mm2/s (cSt)
- All low viscosity samples that do not contain volatile fractions
Ubbelohde-style Tubes
The Ubbelohde-style tube, developed for and widely used in Cannon’s polymer viscometers, is best suited for volatile products that are not a pure solvent.

Advantages
-
- Minimal evaporation of product containing volatile light ends
Recommended Use
-
- Volatile products that have light ends present (e.g., diesel fuel, gasoline, etc.)
